Now and Again
Arizona monsoon clouds built
All day, sky belching brown and gray,
Light flickers alive, purple tongues
Across the visible. To the
North a dense pocket, white bolted
Thick streams of silver, electric
Intersecting arcs. Rain mixed with
Humid sweat stings our eyes, under
Tree, no shelter, thunder crack, the
Torrential summer of D.C.
Window open, gently blowing
Winds, freeway hum and pavement drone
Never mute. It’s dark. Computer
Glares, candles sway, a hollow sense.
